There is a catch however. For now, there are only a few Tesla Supercharger stations with what the company is calling “Magic Docks.” For the uninitiated, Tesla uses a proprietary plug to charge its cars, while most other automakers use a combined charging system, or CCS plug and socket. A Magic Dock has a built-in CCS plug and the user can unlock the plug through the Tesla app.
You’ll need to download the Tesla app on your phone and select the “Charge Your Non-Tesla” option. The app will ask you to push the Tesla charger in, and when the charging cable comes out of the charge station, the CCS adapter comes with it. It looks relatively seamless, and the process hasn’t changed for Tesla owners. There’s also the question of cost, according to MotorTrend, and right now Tesla is charging non-Tesla owners a higher rate than it is charging its customers. There’s also a $12.99 per month subscription, which unlocks the rate that Tesla owners are, well, charged. Right now the difference is reportedly 10 cents per kWh.
